An important step towards allaying concerns about risks to aviation safety and to the health of aircrew and passengers will be to permanently install cabin air contamination monitors aboard aircraft. It begs the question, which substances should be monitored? This paper reviews recent cabin air measurements in the context of plausible sources of contamination and prioritizes the substances that have been found according to their perceived toxicities in order to yield a list of preferred candidates for detection.
