Thermal runaway and thermal propagation in lithium-ion batteries

Simple models are constructed for thermal runaway, considered as a series of Bernoulli trials of individual cells, and thermal propagation, considered as a Markov chain. Although many fine details are not thereby explicitly considered, they are accurately subsumed in the variables controlling the models, an important advantage of which is that they are amenable for use by anyone interested in the risks and safety of lithium-ion batteries without recourse to laborious and often opaque finite element analysis.
