Influence of solar ultraviolet radiation on leaf anatomy and pigment content in maple and ash.
The effect of natural ultraviolet radiation on leaf anatomy and pigment content in maple (Acer campestre L.) and ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa Willd.) growing under different environmental conditions, namely high (1700 m) mountains (Bakuriani), dry subtropics (Shiraki valley) and warm temperate (Tbilisi) has been studied. u.v. acclimation resulted in structural strengthening of the photosynthesic apparatus, increasing content of the bound form of chlorophyll and carotenoids, and enhanced resistance of the chlorophyll-protein-lipid complex to natural u.v. radiation.
Keywords: bound chlorophyll, carotenoids, chlorophyll-protein-lipid complex, labile chlorophyll, mesophyll structure.
