This brief survey of early medieval church building deals with the history and the architecture of the most significant holy sites of the city of Mtskheta and its environs: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral built on the burial place of Christ’s Robe (the first wooden church - around 330, then stone basilica - between 480 and 490), Samtavro Church built around 330 near the blackberry bush where St Nino found shelter after her arrival at Mtskheta, the Holy Cross of Mtskheta erected around 330,and the churches of Antiokia (Antioch, the fourth-fifth centuries), Mtakartli (the fifth-sixth centuries), Getsimania (Gethsemane, before the eighth century), and Bagineti (Armazistsikhe, seventh-eighth centuries).
