The ability to degrade 2,4,6-trinitroluene (TNT) has been studied in a collection of nitrogen- fixing microörganisms isolated from various soils of Georgia. Nitrogen fixers with a high potential for the degradation of TNT, including Azospirillum, have been revealed. Efficient associations of plant-microbes based on these nitrogen fixers have been selected for the phytoremediation of contaminated soils.

Keywords: Azospirillum, biodegradation, nitrogen-fixing microörganisms.
