Some aspects of myelin basic protein
Myelin basic
protein (MBP) is one of the principal constituents of the mammalian myelin
sheath and plays a structural róle in
maintaining myelin stability. It is thought to be responsible for adhesion of
the intracellular surfaces of compact myelin to give the major dense line. MBP
occurs as a number of charge isomers due to posttranslational modifications.
These modifications can regulate the ability of MBP to mediate adhesion between
the intracellular surfaces of myelin. These and some other important aspects of
myelin basic protein are considered.
